Wave functions

This week we will be exploring a more difficult branch of science which is actually fundamental and important to the concept of quantum physics. To understand wave functions we have to understand the wave-particle duality. A particle is like a baseball. By looking at its velocity (speed) you can say where it is at any given time. However a wave is different. Imagine two ropes being brought up and down simultaneously. There is no definite place where the wave is. The wave-particle duality states that rather than a particle travelling along a definite path, it is distributed though space like a wave. The classical idea of trajectory is therefore replaces by a wave which can be defined as a wave function shown as ψ.The wave function determines the probabilities related to the particles position, momentum and other physical properties. So if you have one of the properties of the particle you would have to do some rather difficult mathematical; operations on the wave function to find the probability. The probability shows that you can never be sure as to what will happen despite the fact if you have the information on the particle. Wave function are used throughout quantum physics and features in the Schrödinger equation which we will be revisiting to analyse and explain in detail.Next week we will be looking at the Born interpretation which will come back to wave functions.

Life Is Strange - Episode 2 : Out of Time

Life Is Strange
Episode 2 : Out of Time

4/5

The second episode was released a few days ago. And I'm happy to say it has blown me and I'm sure everyone else away. The first episode was criticised for not having convincing dialogue and choice and the second episode has not disappointed in rectifying these glitches as the episode starts off with the impression that it has the same problems as the last episode but becomes more and more compelling.
The conclusion of the episode was almost heartbreaking with Kate's dilemma which can end one of two ways. The episode in my opinion has explained the life of the characters in a realistic way which only makes us love and empathise with the characters even more.
The choices in this episode has also made more of an impact as your choices make much of an impact and that is expressed making us only even more cautions and immersed in the game.
No matter the outcome of the choices Life Is Strange has shown itself to be a heartbreaking and beautiful story that can relate to a lot of us.
I can easily say I am looking forward to the next episode. Congrats and good luck to the writers of this game.

For those who haven't seen this game the trailer is shown below:

Dark Matter

This week we will be looking at the matter that makes up the majority of the universe, otherwise known as 'dark matter'.

Dark matter has never been observed so how exactly how do we know it is there at all? By observing the effects it has.

Imagine a merry-go-round with stars attached to it being the middle of a galaxy. We all know that gravity keeps the stars attached to the merry-go-round. If the gravity was not there it would fly off of the merry-go-round into space. Sound normal right? Except its not because the gravity needed to hold the stars together is too much so the stars should be flying off. But they are not as if some invisible force is holding them together. So scientists have names this mysterious force 'dark matter'.

So we can use what we see to understand what we cant see.

Solar Eclipse 20/03/15

This is a video showing the eclipse

So this years eclipse was said to be the rarest of all time. The next full/total eclipse will be on the 21st of  August 2017. However we have a lunar eclipse on the 4th of April which will be visible to mainly Africa and Asia. The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in Europe will be on the 28th of September 2015.

So what is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare event( when in total eclipse) which involves the moon being in a certain position and distance.nice away or close to the. When seen from Earth we see a circle around the moon when watching a total solar eclipse.solar eclipses occur in different places and different times each time it occurs.

I think the eclipses are fantastic opportunities to learn and get inspiration from. I strongly think that schools should create a fundraising day each year minimum in order to raise money that can be invested into equipment needed to look at these astronomical wonders. It is something that students and many other people can learn from

The Second Best Marigold Hotel Review

So the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel came out in cinemas on the 26th of February and was a great hit in the movies; with critics giving the movie a rating of of around 4 stars. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about-

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it's making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy - posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone's secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself. (written by Fox Searchlight)

Now going to watch the movie, I found it very thrilling and do not agree with the critics rating. I would rate the movie 4.5 stars out of five as I though the movie had an excellent plot and this is what made it more interesting. Despite the plot revolving around pensioners retiring in India, it has not stopped many young people from watching it. After the first Best Exotic Marigold Hotel coming out in 2012 it made around 90 million Worldwide. This truly shows the power the elders have! The movie was boring in some parts, however this was soon rectified by exciting and interesting scenes afterwards. The highlight for me was the incorporation of other cultures shown by the wedding as well as the traditional music as well as the typical person in India being seen as entrepreneurs and people whom like to take opportunities etc...

Do comment your thoughts on the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!

Big Hero 6 Review

Big Hero 6 Review

4/5

This film is Disney at its best. We follow the story of the young genius scientist Hiro and his companion Baymax.
This film is loved for embracing pop culture as after the death the death of his older brother Hiro surrounds himself with robots which shows that pop culture is not just a way of escaping reality of but a way of facing up to reality.#
Its already gained a huge fan base after being a cute and lovable film with Baymax being a big inflatable robot who find it difficult to fit through space and can quite literally sweep a bookshelf clean.
It also merges then west and the east with it being set in a futuristic Japan in a city called San Fransokyo.
This film is definitely the best of both worlds and gains a tick in my books.

Congrats to Disney on another hit film.

Schrödinger's Cat

Today we will be looking at one of the largest questions in quantum mechanics. It is based around our perspectives and will be briefly looking at the idea of multiverses (If you do not know what a multiverse is, don't worry Quantum Stuff #3 gives a detailed explanation).

So with out further delay I present : Schrödinger's Cat
So the experiment is set up with a cat being out in a tank with a bomb that has 50% of blowing up and 50% of not. But until we look into the tanker we do not know whether the cat is alive or dead.
But if repeat the experiments enough times the cat will die 50% of the time and the cat will live the other 50% of the time.

But the quantum mechanics interpretation is that the cat is in a superposition. Its both dead and alive and our looking into the tank forces natures decision. So our curiosity kills the cat.

But what about the cat? There are two possibilities for the cat : the gunpowder will explode and the cat will see it explode or it will not and the cat will not see it explode. Only one outcome can occur at one time and therefore the cats reality becomes entangles with the outcome of the experiment. And its our observation that forces nature to choose one option or the other

But in a way we are like that cat. Either we see the cat dead or alive. So who is observing us to force nature to choose one reality. Or do both possibilities happen in parallel with a larger multiverse

And without a reasonable answer or explanation this collapsing to one one reality is one of the biggest unanswered question in modern quantum mechanics.

Transistors

This week we will be looking at particles on a quantum level in the form of the component that makes the modern day computer work. The transistor.

Transistors can be either on or off. It controls the flow of electricity by letting it through and cutting it off. It works because of semi-conductors. So what is a semiconductor?

A semiconductor conducts electricity better than an insulator but nearly as well as a metal. Pure silicon is an example of this. Because of the 4 electrons each atom has it can easily form a tetrahedral crystal but bonding to its 4 nearest neighbours. And few particles gain the energy to escape their bonds. These mobile charges make silicon a semi-conductor.

But to make these semi-conductors useful in transistor a process called 'doping' has to happen. Doping is adding another substance to enhance performance the same way an athlete would but on an atomic level.

There are two types of doping. The n-type and the p-type.
The n-type is adding a 5 electron substance such as Phosphorus into pure silicon which adds an extra electron which makes it a better conductor as there are more mobile charges. It has a similar structure to silicon and can therefore fit into the structure.
The p-type is adding a 3 electron substance which leaves a positive hole (where there is no electron) where electrons move towards which creates this never ending flow of electrons which again makes it a better conductor. It has a similar structure to silicon and can therefore fit into the structure.

But what has this got to do with transistors? The n-type and p-type are placed together in layers with the semiconductors being insulated by an oxide layer (grey layer).

But the n-type and p-type do not stay to themselves and the n-type fills in the holes in the p-type silicon and cause what sic called the 'depletion layer'. So what's been depleted? The moving charges. With all of the spaces filled here is no longer any moving electrons. Because the p-type has no longer got any positive holes it becomes negative and repels any electrons trying to come across from the n-type silicon. So it acts like an barrier. This is the transistor off.

To turn it on you have to apply a small positive voltage to the gate. This thins the depletion layer and lets electrons get through which creates a conducting channel and therefore turns the transistor on.

Table Tennis

In Table Tennis, technique is really important, especially if you are just a beginner, but it isn't the only important thing. Try to avoid becoming a ‘technique freak’, as you should also focus on other areas of tables tennis as well. Don’t have improving your technique, or making your shots feel better as your number one goal. Improving your technique should be a means to an end, which is improving your overall development as a player, and specifically your match performance. A strong technique will enable you to play table tennis more efficiently, making the best use of what you’ve got, and decreasing the chance of injury while doing so.

When you tackle technique, you should follow the following, in order:

1) Stance

2) Grip
3) Footwork
4) Strokes

There are also a few things needed in order to play table tennis:

A bat
First of all, you'll need a bat of your own. Sure, you can always borrow other people's, but it's best to have your own personal ping-pong paddle. You will also need to choose your own bat that tailors your style, in order for your techniques to be more efficient and for you to be comfortable with your playing style.

A ball
Ping-pong balls can be bought from many sports stores, although most clubs will purchase them from table tennis dealers. Orange and white coloured balls are usually used in competitions, while there are also several other coloured balls available to non-professionals.

A net
Good quality nets are fairly cheap and nets that are easily set up are also very good to use, as it does not take much time to set up. Nets should also be very tight and kept in position, not loose.

A table

What good is playing table tennis without a table? These are usually supplied by club owners, or could be bought online or in sports shops. So you do not need to bring a table every time you wish to play. Although you could have one at home.

I hope this brief insight into table tennis has been useful for you and be sure to implement some new techniques into your games!

Parallel Universes

Here we are and this week we are going to explore 3 different theories on parallel universes. These thieves are called 'Multiverses'. Multiverses usually refers to one of three largely unrelated proposed physical models for the universe.

Theory 1 - Bubble Universes

This is the most straightforward. The basic idea is that there other parts of the universe so far away that we will never see them. This theory was created to explain why our universe is so good at making galaxies and black holes and so on. It is said that if each of these 'bubbles' had different laws of physics it would only be possible for us to exist in one of these bubbles, our observable universe.

Theory 2 - Membranes

This theory was made up by string theorists that believe our 'universe' is within a 9 dimension universe. The same way that a sheet of paper is a 2 dimensional object within our 3 dimensional world our 'universe' is like a sheet of paper within this 9 dimensional universe. In fact these so called universes are called membranes.

Theory 3 - Many Worlds

This theory uis arguably the most difficult to grasp. This theory states that everything that could does happen and that we just happen to exist in the series of happenings that lead us to the present day.

Don't worry if none of these theories seem true as none of them have been proven with evidence but do remember that the people coming up with these theories are not philosophers and everything that can be tested will be tested.
